  • This day features one of the Oaklawn’s most popular promotions- the Progressive Cash Giveaway. Here everyone receives an entry coupon at the gate: a $1,000 winner is drawn after the race 1, and a $2,000 winner is drawn after the race 2. This giveaway increases by $1,000 with each race and culminates with $10,000 awarded after the race 10. All in all, $55,000 is distributed amongst the lucky fans. This collective anticipation after each race is part of the day’s fun.
  • In 2002 & 2012, the massive amount of entries led Oaklawn the split of Southwest into two divisions. In both the years, they were run as races 8 & 9, and the ones going for the race had the opportunity to bet on a special Southwest daily double. In 2012, trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Rafael Bejarano won both legs.
  • The Grade 3, $500,000 razorback Handicap shares the card with the Southwest Stakes for the first time ever. This race is mainly for horses that are 4 years old or above. And it received an increased purse and a new date to provide horsemen with the option of a prep race for races such as the Dubai World Cup. Also, it is considered as the second major local prep for the Grade 1, $750,000 Oaklawn Handicap.
  • The Razorback has ties with the University of Arkansas’s athletics program, which is the premier sporting interest in the state without professional leagues. And the Razorback Handicap was named in honor of the university’s athletics mascot.
